A concrete fence is a reliable protection of the property and a showpiece of every house. In order for it to maintain its durability and aesthetic appearance for a long time, it is worth taking proper care of it. Impregnation for concrete fences helps to maintain the durability and aesthetics of the fence. In this article we will discuss the different types of JONIEC® fence impregnators and how to properly carry out the impregnation process.
What to impregnate a concrete fence with
JONIEC® offers several types of impregnates. It is important to remember that not every preparation will be suitable for every fence. Impregnates for fence blocks differ in their mode of action and visual effect. When choosing a product, be guided primarily by the colour and texture of the block.
1. water-based impregnates
Water-based impregnations for concrete fences offer a variety of solutions for protection and aesthetics. Among them is a hydrophobic impregnator for universal use, providing a protective barrier and reducing water absorption. Our range also includes MASTER waterproofing, which gives a wet stone effect, emphasising the depth of colour of concrete, as well as colour impregnates such as white and graphite, which refresh the appearance of the fence and add character.
The characteristics of the individual specifications are shown in the following overview.1.1 Universal water-repellent impregnate
● impregnation of slate fencing, smooth fencing, scratch fencing,
● does not strengthen or change the colour of impregnated products,● forms a protective membrane protecting the surface of the fence against water penetration,
● the hydrophobic layer formed significantly reduces the surface absorption of water,
● increases frost resistance parameters,
● binds dust and prevents contamination of the surface,
● the only impregnate that does not cover the SCRATCH effect (ROMA Perfect, ROMA Diamond, ROMA Nova).
1.2 MASTER waterproofing
● action similar to water repellent impregnator,
● produces a "wet stone" effect,● enhances colour and increases aesthetic qualities,
not recommended for light colours: SILVER (GORC® de Luxe), WHITE (ROMA Horizon), SNOW (ROMA Mega).
1.3 Colour impregnation (white, graphite)
- dedicated to ROMA Horizon fence in WHITE, GRAPHITE,
- permanently colours concrete surfaces,
- refreshes and revitalises the appearance,
- hides colour defects, stains and discolourations on the concrete surface
- protects the surface from the damaging effects of water and frost,
- increases the lifespan of concrete fences.
2. Solvent-based impregnates
Solvent-based impregnations for concrete fences, such as the PROTECT version, not only provide a wet stone effect, but also increase the abrasion resistance of the concrete. Alternatively, the PROTECT PLUS version gives the concrete a darkened, matt finish, which may be desirable for those looking for a more subdued effect. Both of these products offer additional protection, enhancing the aesthetics and durability of concrete fences.
2.1 PROTECT waterproofing
● enhances the colour creating a "wet stone" effect,
● improves resistance to dirt and harmful weathering effects,● reduces the abrasiveness of the concrete surface,
● dedicated to most JONIEC® products,
● not recommended for light colours: SILVER (GORC® de Luxe), WHITE (ROMA Horizon), SNOW (ROMA Mega) - colour may turn grey,
● not recommended for surfaces with SCRATCH treatment (ROMA Perfect, ROMA Diamond, ROMA Nova),
● not recommended for ROMA Horizon fences in WHITE, GRAPHITE.
2.2 PROTECT PLUS PREMIUM impregnate
● effect similar to PROTECT impregnate,
● gives a strong darkening effect and a matt surface,● high abrasion and slip resistance.
How to impregnate a concrete fence
Impregnation of JONIEC® fences can be carried out when the air temperature is between +5°C and 25°C. The time that has elapsed since the completion of the construction is not without significance - it is important that it is a minimum of one month.
Application stages:
- Protect surfaces not to be cleaned and waterproofed (gate, gate, panels).
- Thoroughly clean the concrete fence with a pressure washer.
- If there are efflorescences on the surface of the concrete blocks - remove them with a dedicated preparation.
- After 7 days from the application of the efflorescence remover (the surface must be clean and dry), apply a suitable impregnator for concrete fences.
- Apply the preparation evenly to the surface with a brush, roller or by spraying. Leave for a few minutes for the preparation to be absorbed into the material.
- Apply successive coats of impregnate using the "wet on wet" method. In places where the layer of impregnate is to be thicker, apply the next layer before the previous one dries, in short intervals. This applies, for example, to parts of the fence exposed to intense weathering and depending on surface absorption and ambient temperature. Repeat the process until the substrate is saturated.
- After drying, test the absorbency of the substrate to check the effectiveness of the preparation. If necessary, it is recommended to impregnate concrete fences twice to obtain a lasting effect.
Summary
Impregnation for concrete fences is an essential element in maintaining the durability and aesthetics of the fence. The selection of the right product, for example for a single impregnation, and the correct application are crucial for effective protection against weathering and mechanical damage. Remember to adapt the impregnator to the surface absorbency, ambient temperature and type of concrete, and follow the manufacturer's recommendations for application and maintenance. This will ensure that the concrete fence will remain in excellent condition for many years.
